The Temperature in the Algarve Throughout the Year

The Algarve is known for having stunning blue flag beaches and a fantastic Mediterranian climate, which makes it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. Whatever time of year you choose to visit Portugal, you will have a fantastic time. 


The Algarve is one of the sunniest places in Europe and even beats California, with 300 days of sunshine on average a year. In peak Summertime, you can expect up to 12 hours of sunshine every day and rarely any rain. 

Algarve weather in the Spring

In the Algarve, Spring is from March until May and you can typically expect cooler temperatures of around 18-20 degrees during the day. In March, you can expect the cooler temperatures of around 18 degrees and May typically reaches between 20-22 degrees. 


The sun typically shines for 9-10 hours during the Springtime and the temperatures are consistently warm. In March and April, around 40mm of rain is expected to fall, which decreases to 20mm in May. Compared to many UK cities, which get around 50mm in May. The Algarve is still warm during this time of year and is a lot quieter than during the peak summer months. 

Algarve weather in the Summer 

The temperatures in the Algarve are much warmer in the Summer months, which begin in June and end in September. Typically, the Summer begins with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s, which rises to the low-mid 30s.


When the sun goes down, temperatures remain at around 20 degrees, meaning that it’s pleasant to go out in the evening. Rainfall is very minimal during the Summer months, making this an ideal time to book an Algarve villa holiday

Algarve weather in Autumn 

Autumn begins between October and November when temperatures are still really pleasant and warm. Sunlight averages around 12 hours per day and temperatures start at around 22 degrees in October and 19 degrees in November. Nighttime temperatures can drop to as low at 13 degrees during this time. 

Algarve weather in Winter

During the winter months, which last from December until February, the temperatures in the Algarve are still pleasant but are a lot cooler than the Summer months. The average temperature is around 16 degrees in December, which drops to 15 degrees in January and February. 


Sunshine levels peak at around 6 hours a day during the winter months and the sea temperature becomes much cooler, at an average of 14 degrees. Unlike the UK, the Algarve rarely experiences extreme weather conditions, however it’s much cooler and quieter during the Winter season.
