This is the least developed area of Portugal and as such offers some breathtaking scenery. Jagged cliffs, wild coastlines and inland nature reserves such as the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, mean fans of nature will feel very at home. Stunning coastlines that have been eroded over centuries mean long walks take in a wide range of fantastic views. If you are looking for something more manmade, then the main resorts offer a fascinating insight into Portugal’s past. Lagos dates back to 2000 years BC and the older part of the city is still surrounded by its 16th century walls. Churches, monuments and museums mean there is a wealth of knowledge hidden throughout its cobbled streets.
Praia Do Luz is a hugely popular family destination. With a lovely beach backing onto the promenade of restaurants, bars and cafes, it provides everything you need for a relaxing break. Waterparks like Slide and Splash are just down the road at Lagoa, while a Blo-go karting track towards Sagres and monkey islands at Lagos Zoo means there are plenty of options to keep the children occupied before you retire to your villa or apartment at the end of a busy day in the sun.
Lagos is a vibrant resort with a vast array of restaurants off Praca de Gil Eanes, plus a number of charming sidestreets that cross each other, making it ideal for evening meanders and impulsive drinks. The relaxing riverside of Alvor offers an idyllic setting to watch the fishing boats, with the added bonus of fresh fish restaurants to tempt the palate. Praia Do Luz, meanwhile, is a classic promenade resort, meaning you have your pick of family-friendly cafes from which to people-watch.
