Best Beaches For Surfing in the Algarve

So, you’re thinking about getting away for a bit and catching some waves? Excellent choice. If you’re looking for the best beaches for surfing in the Algarve, you’ve likely realised that while the south coast is great for a chilled glass of Rosé, the Western Algarve is where the real surfing happens.

The Algarve isn’t just one big beach. It’s actually quite a different experience depending on where you end up going. While the central areas are all about glitz and golf, the West is wilder and boasts some of the most consistent surf in Europe. But don’t worry, just because it is a tad wilder, that doesn’t mean you have to rough it. We’re talking world-class waves by day and high-end luxury villas by night.

Why is the Western Algarve the peak of surfing in Portugal?

Before we start talking about the best beach locations, let’s quickly go over why the Western Algarve is the place to be. Why should you skip out on the famous resorts of Vilamoura for the wilder shores of the West?

Well, mainly for consistency, really. Because the West Coast of Portugal faces the full force of the Atlantic, it’s pretty much a wave magnet. Even when the rest of Europe is looking like a lake, the Western Algarve usually has a rideable wave.

For someone looking for a surf getaway, this brings some peace of mind. There’s nothing worse than booking an exciting surf break only to find the ocean has decided to take a nap. In the West, you’ve got:

  • Multiple exposures: If the wind is blowing the wrong way on one beach, you can simply drive fifteen minutes around the corner to a different cove where the conditions will be ideal.
  • Variety of breaks: From gentle waves perfect for a longboard to hollow, fast barrels for the adrenaline junkies, the surf here is incredibly diverse.

So leave the calm, turquoise swimming pools to the tourists in the central resorts. If you want the real power of the ocean, you head West.

Is the Atlantic Ocean cold?

We know our American friends might be used to the bath-like temperatures of Florida or the tropical warmth of Hawaii. If you jump into the water here in just your board shorts, you might let out a noise that your ego won’t thank you for.

The Atlantic is refreshing, let’s put it that way. But it’s actually very manageable once you’re geared up.

  • Summer (May – September): The water hovers around 18°C-21°C. A standard 3/2mm wetsuit (that’s 3mm thick on the chest, 2mm on the arms) is the industry standard. It keeps the wind chill at bay and lets you stay in the water for hours without turning blue.
  • Winter (October – April): The temperature drops to about 14°C-16°C. This is when you’ll want a 4/3mm wetsuit. It’s a bit thicker, but with modern neoprene technology, you’ll still have good mobility.

But what is the real reason why the water temperature doesn’t bother us? The sun. The Algarve famously boasts over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Even in the depths of February, you can come out of a surf session, peel off your suit, and be bone-dry and toasted warm by the sun within ten minutes.

Trust us, once you’ve caught your first wave against the backdrop of those golden cliffs, the last thing you’ll be thinking about is the temperature.

Does the West Coast of Portugal get crowded?

Because the West Coast is part of a protected Natural Park, there are strict limits on large-scale development. Unlike the crowded beaches further east, the surfing beaches in the West feel vast and airy. Even on a busy day, you can always find a peak to yourself if you’re willing to walk five minutes down the sand. It’s high-end surfing with all the elbow room you could ask for.

Where to surf in Portugal

Now that you’re sold on the why, let’s talk about the where. The coastline from Aljezur down to Sagres is dotted with hidden coves and expansive bays, each with its own personality. Whether you’re looking for a sheltered spot to learn the basics or some big waves to test your limits, there’s a beach just for you.

To help you plan your route from your villa to the lineup, we’ve hand-picked our top five spots. These are some top-notch spots where the waves are consistent, the scenery is breathtaking, and the post-surf lunch is always worth the paddle.

1. Praia da Arrifana

If there were a beauty pageant for beaches, Praia da Arrifana would take the crown every single year. It’s hidden at the bottom of towering sandstone cliffs near the charming town of Aljezur. This crescent-shaped bay is as picturesque as it gets.

Arrifana is famous for its waves at the north end of the beach. When the swell is big, the waves are world-class, long, peeling, and perfect for intermediate to advanced surfers. However, the main beach break is much more forgiving, making it a top spot for those still finding their feet.

After your session, head up the cliff to one of the local seafood spots. There’s nothing quite like eating grilled octopus while looking down at the lines of swell you just surfed.

2. Praia do Amado

Located just outside the surf-centric village of Carrapateira, Praia do Amado is arguably the most famous surf beach in Portugal. It’s huge, it’s beautiful, and it’s got enough space for everyone.

For our US guests used to the wide-open spaces of California or the Outer Banks, Amado feels like home. It’s a massive expanse of sand with multiple peaks, meaning you can usually find a quiet corner to call your own. It’s also very well-protected from the north winds, which can be a session-killer elsewhere.

It’s also great for beginners, being at the heart of Western Algarve surf schools. If you’re looking for a private coach to help you catch your first green wave, this is the place to do it. The sandy bottom is forgiving, and the waves are consistent but rarely scary.

3. Praia da Cordoama

If you want to feel like you’ve reached the end of the world, head to Praia da Cordoama near Sagres. This is the Algarve at its most raw. High cliffs, vast horizons, and powerful Atlantic energy.

Because it’s so exposed, it picks up even the smallest swells. It’s a great spot to go looking for those high-octane surf sessions when everywhere else is flat.

Cordoama can get a bit misty due to the sea spray. It’s incredibly atmospheric, but it can be chilly. We recommend heading back to a luxury villa for a dip in a heated pool once the Atlantic has had its way with you.

4. Praia do Beliche

When the winter swells get massive (we’re talking 15ft+), the West Coast becomes a playground for the pros. For the rest of us, we head to Praia do Beliche.

Located right between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent (the southwesternmost point of Europe), Beliche is a sheltered cove. When the North winds are howling, Beliche remains glassy and tucked away.

In the summer, Beliche is a stunning, calm swimming beach. But from October to March, it turns into a high-performance surfing arena. It’s one of the best spots for luxury surf breaks in the Algarve during the off-season.

5. Meia Praia

Sometimes, you don’t want to drive into the wilderness. You want a surf, a shower, and a shopping trip. Enter Meia Praia In Lagos.

While technically on the south coast, this 5km stretch of golden sand works beautifully when a big wind or a massive Atlantic swell wraps around the point.

Lagos is the hub of the Western Algarve. Staying in a luxury villa in Lagos gives you the best of both worlds. It gives you easy access to the wild West Coast beaches and the sophisticated dining and nightlife of the Marina.

It’s the best for families. While mum or dad is out catching waves, the kids can play in the shallow, calmer waters or enjoy a lesson at a local surf club.
