This beautiful riverside village is tipped to be one of the Algarve’s top holiday destinations.
This traditional Portuguese fishing village has become a sought-after holiday destination. Smaller and more traditional than nearby Portimão, Ferragudo is located across the river estuary of Rio Arade. The village’s pretty white-washed houses overlook the harbour and the palm-fringed gardens bring a real air of tranquility to Ferragudo.
The main square, Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, is the perfect destination for breakfast or a light lunch, whilst just around the corner the quay is home to traditional restaurants offering fresh fish dishes and stunning views of the Arade.
At Praia da Angrinha, the beach closest to the village, you’ll see the majestic Fort of São João de Arade protectively guarding Ferragudo. Originally built as a look-out tower in the fifteenth century, this is now a beautiful private property which can be admired from afar.
Ferragudo even has its own lighthouse boasting stunning views of Portimão across the river and the Monchique hills in the background.
If you’re still craving culture and a little bit of Portuguese history, make sure you visit nearby Silves with its own Moorish castle or the town of Lagos with its fifteenth century defensive walls and a fort which to this day still guards the entrance to the harbour.
For relaxing family days by the sea, there’s the endless sandy beaches of Praia Grande and Praia Pintadinho.
Or if you’re feeling a bit more active, why not try windsurfing on the river, take a fishing trip from nearby Portimão or go dolphin watching. For all the family there’s also the Slide and Splash water park in nearby Lagoa. If you’re a golfer, there are two majestic golf courses designed by Nick Faldo and Christy O’Connor Jnr.
