      Famous for its gypsy market held every Saturday at the end of Rua da Nossa Senhora da Piedade, where you can browse stalls filled with leather goods, clothes, shoes, ceramics, jewellery, and crafts. It’s great for picking up that unique gift!

      Loulé also has a daily market in the Arabian-style market hall on Praça da República – open every morning except Sunday. Here you can find fresh local produce, seafood, spices, traditional sweets and a range of other local foods.

      No visit to Loulé is complete without a stroll through its famous market. Housed in a building with beautiful architecture, the Mercado Municipal de Loulé is the beating heart of the town. Open every day except Sunday, you’ll find fresh local produce, fish, meats, cheeses and Portuguese specialities.

      This charming Portuguese town is situated inland, however if you’re looking for a day to relax, the golden, sandy beaches of Vilamoura and Quarteira are close by.       For a flavour of traditional Portuguese culture look no further than the Brazilian style Loulé Carnival, perhaps the biggest highlight of the year. Famous across the Algarve, this colourful carnival takes place in February over three days, the third day being Shrove Tuesday. With costumes, music and dancing to rival Brazil’s Rio Carnival, it’s no wonder that people flock from all over the Algarve to watch the procession.

      A modern and stylish restaurant, Aquinta is located just 2 km from Almancil town and offers stunning sea views as well as a reputation as one of The Algarve’s best restaurants. The menu features a range of delectable dishes, including Veal Carpaccio Mille-Feuille as a starter, and Duck Breast with red wine and red berry sauce as a main course. Prices range from €9 to €17 for starters, and €18 to €38 for mains.

      Portuguese originals like bacalau (Cod) and dourada (Sea Bream) are the order of the day at this wonderfully authentic old charmer, located right next to the old market building and with prices around €20 to €25. Sit back, order some well-priced local wine and get people watching.

    Best sunset spot: Head to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (the Mae Soberana church). It sits high on a hill overlooking the town and offers views all the way to the ocean.

    Family fun: Visit Loulé during the Carnival (February) or the Noite Branca (White Night) in summer, the town transforms into a giant street party that is fun for all ages.

    Booking tip: Saturday is market day in Loulé, and the town is at its busiest. We recommend arriving early (before 9:00 AM) to enjoy the best of the farmers’ market before the crowds arrive.
