Things to do in Albufeira Old Town

Albufeira is the ultimate holiday destination whether you are with family, friends or a loved one, as well as being the best place in the Algarve to party, relax or play golf. The town is divided into the old town and the Strip, so no matter what kind of holiday you are looking for, you are sure to find what you are looking for.

The Strip is renowned for its bustling nightlife full of clubs, bars and restaurant, whilst the old town consists of beautiful cobblestone streets and traditional Portuguese culture. Keep reading to discover all of the fantastic things to do in Albufeira Old Town.

Albufeira old town square

Albufeira Old Town Square is the beating heart of the atmospheric Albufeira Old Town. This beautiful and tree-shaded public space offers exquisite dining, entertainment and people-watching, as well as an amazing shopping experience. No matter what time of the day you visit, you will never be short of things to do in Albufeira Old Town Square.

Browse the handful of shops, which sell everything from beach toys to branded clothes and souvenirs. The Old Town is also home to the Galeria de Arte Pintor Samora Barros (Tv. Cândido dos Reis 2, 8200-064 Albufeira / Open Monday to Saturday, 09:30 – 12:30 & 1:30 – 17:30), which hosts an array of art exhibitions, making for the perfect day out.

Relax

The old town of Albufeira consists of lovely cobblestone streets with mosaic patterns, perfect for a morning stroll under the rising sun. The alfresco dining areas and bars, such as Terrazzo, are ideal locations to enjoy the square’s bustling activity whilst taking in the true essence of this ancient fishing village. Dine on the delicious seafood that has been brought in fresh from the marina and sip on coffee, icecold beer or a glass of Portuguese wine. Eating fresh Portuguese cuisine under the sun whilst watching the world go by is by far one of the most relaxing things to do in Albufeira Old Town.

Visit the Beach

In front of the Old Town of Albufeira, you will find two beaches

  • Praia do Pescadores
  • Praia do Peneco

You can visit these via a tunnel or by walking from downtown Albufeira. The beach is one of the most relaxing (and fun) things to do in Albufeira Old Town, and a great day out with the kids. On the beach, you can spot the colourful fishing boats and the fishermen at work. Just a short walk from the beach, in front of the famous restaurant ‘A Ruina’ (Largo Cais Herculano, 8200-061 Albufeira, Portugal), you can see the fish auction building.

Enjoy Its History

One of the best things to do in Albufeira Old Town is just to walk its fascinating streets whilst embracing its rich historic culture. The Old Town is a great place to witness the historic centre of Albufeira. Whilst walking, you will discover small and quiet alleys as well as the crowded square and famous historic landmarks. Some of the top historical attractions in Albufeira include:

  • Church of São Sebastião – This beautifully preserved church dates back to the 18th century and stands as a fine example of Baroque architecture in the Algarve. Inside, you’ll find stunning gilded altarpieces and intricate woodwork that tell tales of the town’s religious past. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect on the centuries of history that have shaped Albufeira.
  • Museu Municipal de Arqueologia – Housed in a former convent, this museum offers fascinating insights into the region’s ancient past. From prehistoric artefacts to Roman and Moorish relics, it’s a treasure trove if you’re interested in history. The exhibits paint a vivid picture of how Albufeira evolved through the ages. It is open Tuesday to Sunday between 09:30 am & 17:30 pm, with standard tickets costing €3.06, but concessions are available.
  • Old Town Walls – The remnants of Albufeira’s old defensive walls are a striking reminder of the town’s strategic importance in centuries past. Walking along the preserved sections gives you a sense of the fortifications that used to protect the community.
  • Igreja Matriz – Known as the Mother Church, Igreja Matriz dates from the 18th century and is one of the Old Town’s architectural highlights. It may look simple from the outside, but inside hides a richly decorated interior, complete with traditional azulejo tiles and beautiful religious artwork that reflect the town’s cultural heritage. Located at R. da Igreja, 8500-597 Portimão. Opening times:
    • Monday to Friday: 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and 15:00 to 19:00
    • Saturday: 17:00 to 19:00
    • Sunday: 10:30 am to 13:00 pm and 17:00 to 19:00

The Marina

Albufeira’s marina is located west of the Old Town. It is here that you can take a relaxing stroll and see many of the boats in the marina, surrounded by colourful buildings and blue waters. The marina has a different atmosphere than the rest of the town, as it’s much quieter and laid back. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants that overlook the dock, which are perfect for soaking in the sun:

  • LemonDrops – Unsure on the cuisine you’d like? Well, LemonDrops has a varied menu with all kinds of dishes, including seafood, salads (or Wonder Bowls, as they call them), sirloin steak and more! Relax on the terrace with views over the marina, or be seated in its beautiful dining area. It also has a kids’ menu, making it great for families. Open every day 9:30 am – 22:30.
  • Nosolo Italia – Located on the marina promenade, this Italian restaurant offers all of your favourite Italian dishes, with the added view and surroundings of the wonderful marina. You can also choose to sit closer to the water with an outdoor seating area closer to the docks. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on their huge ice cream sundaes. Open 10:00 am – 23:00.
  • Restaurante Japonês – Wine and Sushi. What a combination! Every dish here is served to perfection and presented beautifully. We recommend trying one of their platters and pairing it with a lovely glass of wine. They’re truly a work of art, with exquisite garnishing and delicate flavours that showcase the chef’s attention to detail. Whether you’re a sushi lover or just curious to try something new, it’s worth a visit. Open Tuesday to Sunday 12:00 pm – 23:00.
